Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Whereabouts is the bakery school?

Caroline’s Bakery School is in a small hamlet called Merthyr Cynog. This is situated about eight miles north of Brecon in Powys, over 1000 foot above sea level on the top of a hill next to a church.

Q. Is there parking?

There is ample parking on site.

Q. How do I apply?

Through this website, by letter or a phone call. We prefer as much notice as possible but we also take last minute bookings.

Q. How do I pay?

We accept cheques, cash and bank transfer.

Q. How is my bakery course booking confirmed?

By email normally within a day or two. By letter if you prefer or by text if that is your preference. If it is a gift we normally supply a voucher which the recipient has up to twelve months to use. Once you have booked a course you will receive confirmation and information about the day.

Q. Can I take photographs?

Yes and video as well. We often take our own which we sometimes use on our own social media. Equally you have a right not to have your photo taken, let us know on the day.

Q. Is there a vegetarian option for lunch.

Yes, and we normally ask for any other dietary requirements you may have when we confirm your booking.

Q. What happens if Caroline’s cancels a course?

Bearing in mind our location, we sometimes have to cancel courses even at short notice especially if significantly bad weather is forecast. In the event, we will fully refund you or offer a swap to another course. We cannot be held liable for any third-party costs, such as travel bookings or accommodation.

Q. What happens if I need to cancel a course booking?

We are normally pretty laid back about cancellations especially if you are ill or there is an emergency. We are happy to swap you to a different course if there is space or if you prefer we will usually offer a refund if we can accommodate someone else in your place. That of course means you will need to give us at least 7 days notice.

Q. Is there accommodation available?

We have self-catering accommodation for one couple on site We accept dogs. We also have access to two more holiday cottages a few minutes drive away in a fantastic location. One cottage accommodates four the other six people. This accommodation may be available outside of the bakery course dates. It can often be booked by others so is not always available but the more notice you can give the better.

Q. What is included in the course?

Almost everything – All ingredients, utensils, knives, equipment and protective clothing, all meals (except where stated), all refreshments, hand out’s, flour (on the bread making courses) even bags for the products you make.

Q. Those dreaded words Health & Safety

You will be given a full housekeeping overview at the start and we will be explaining the risks of working in a fully functioning bakery at the beginning. After then, you will be required to wear a hat and aprons and follow all of Caroline’s instructions to the letter especially around moving equipment and/or the ovens. We ask all pupils to wear shoes with non-slip soles as well as practical layered clothing (It can get quite warm). The bakery and its environs is non-smoking.

On the children’s courses where you leave the site, you agree to the conditions we apply to your availability in an emergency etc. Caroline and her staff are fully police checked.

Q. Any other conditions?

By booking on any of our courses you agree to abide by our terms and conditions. We reserve the right to make amendments to any workshop or class content and recipes without notice.
